Backyard Farming Connection Monthly Update
February was all about garden planning and seed ordering, plus I tried a few new from scratch recipes and kept moving forward with my homestead routine in the kitchen. If you’ve been here for a while, you will know that’s my go-to line, especially when I stall: it’s better to keep moving.
(this photo is clearly not from this month, but it is what I’m keeping in mind this month to stay motivated)
In the kitchen this means that I try to always have something in the works - bread rising, granola baking, yogurt underway, etc. I try to focus less on the product and more on the process of having things underway. It helps me mentally to break up the tasks and it’s less overwhelming.
On the animal side of things the chickens have weathered the weather well this winter despite the cold! The goats and sheep are doing well - Sven (our 10 year old wether) is still struggling with weight so I’ve added an additional molasses ball with oats and feed for a midday snack every other day.
I also used the month to clean out our maple supplies and check over my seeds starting equipment. At the end of the month we headed out of town for a week and had a trusted neighbor here to manage things.

What’s March Look Like?
I am not starting a lot of early seeds this year so will only start a few things in late-March. Most of the other seeds will get started in April. I’m still debating a few things and whether to buy starts or to start my own seeds.
We’ll also be tapping the trees and boiling sap throughout the month.
Updates: Backyard Farming on Substack
I started my first lives skills workshop in January. This month I shared about how to make maple syrup, but I also went into how I built up this system and skills over time. When we first tapped trees 13 years ago - we did it with a few tools and a difficult boiling set up. Over the years we’ve simplified and streamlined the system making it more efficient and sustainable.
Resource Library: In addition to the Modern Homesteading Academy, I am sharing all my best tools in my Homesteading Resource Library - there are currently lots of printables/tools here to help you plan and manage everything. Last month you can get my root cellar storage guide.
