Backyard Farming Connection Monthly Update
April was on the cool side here in NH, but there is still very little to complain about. It’s rained consistently and refilled our pond. The grass is green and leaves are just starting to come out on the trees. The reality is in the next few week’s spring will burst out and it will be time for season of frantic planting.
We’ve used April to try to get ahead of the garden work and honestly we were only moderately successful - there are still a few garden beds to be prepped and corners of our yard are still in need of some work.
As usual, on a homestead, the animals come first. We’ve cleaned out winter housing, done some extra work on the coop, reinforced some goat fencing and done some extra goat care. Our 4 remaining goats are all on the older side (between 11-13 years old) and need a little extra care each year (especially Sven)!
The lambs continue to grow and bounce and we are entertained constantly by their antics.
In addition to getting some seedlings and early season seeds into the ground, we moved some fruit trees from around the yard into a more centrally located orchard. When we first moved here about 13 years ago, we chose to disperse our fruit trees and while this worked well, a few trees simple weren’t getting enough sun and are now together in one of the old garden beds as well as a new nectarine tree.

What’s May Look Like?
Our last average frost date is May 13th which means things start to get serious this month. I spend most of the month getting things in the ground and keeping the early season weeds at bay.
Besides that we’ll be spending a lot of time on other parts of our life (like kid’s soccer games and a family trip).
