Does a raised bed have a bottom to it or is it just four sides placed on dirt?

It can be either. If you have a bottom, the bed just needs to be deep enough for the root systems. I prefer no bottom to my raised beds.

I would just think that the bottom would eventually get soaked with water and rot. Which wouldn’t be bad for the ecology but kind of messy when you’re working with it I agree that maybe a no bottom just a square.

Yes - they will rot - Some people with limited mobility will have a raised bed with a bottom but it's elevated off the ground which works ok.

what do you think about getting hedgehogs and building habitat for them so that they keep slugs and snails at bay, and making habitat for mantises or katydids to keep insect pests in check?
